Swedish Massage Newport Beach

Swedish Massage –Scandinavian tradition right here in Newport Beach.

Swedish Massage is one of the most well known forms of therapy. It’s a wonderful way to start if you are new to professional massage therapy. It’s also a favorite of people around the world who are intimately familiar with massage techniques, and it is the foundation for other popular modern massage techniques such as Deep Tissue Massage and Sports Massage.

During your Swedish Massage session at Massage Heights your licensed massage therapist (LMT) will utilize certain specific massage techniques. Those include effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, friction and vibration.

Effleurage is a French term. In the context of massage, effleurage means “to touch lightly,” or a “delicate, stroking motion.” This massage technique is generally used over large surfaces of the body, like the back, arms, legs or chest. This massage technique creates a sense of unity, joining one area of the body to the next with large, sweeping motions and giving your body an all-over sense of well-being and connectedness.

Petrissage is French for “kneading.” As a massage technique, the term refers to kneading, lifting and squeezing the skin. Petrissage is often used to warm and prepare the entire body for more directed techniques targeted to massage specific muscles or body parts.

Tapotement is another French word. It means “tapping.” As a massage technique, the term indicates gentle to firm striking of the body, usually using the side of the hand. This technique resembles a two-handed karate-chop and is a favorite in Hollywood movie spa scenes!

Friction is the process of creating heat to facilitate relaxation of your muscles. Often, the therapist will create friction and heat by rubbing her hands briskly against your skin. The LMT can also create heat by rubbing her own hands together and applying them to your skin.

Vibration - sometimes called shaking - refers to a practice in which the therapist uses the heel or side of the hand or the fingertips to momentarily shake the area of the body that is of focus. This technique helps to loosen the muscles underlying the area being vibrated and is particularly effective on tight, tense muscles.

Stretching and/or traction are other techniques sometimes employed during this type of Massage. Gently pulling the relaxed arms, legs or even the head lengthens the corresponding muscles and helps to relieve tightness and increase range of motion.

Here is what you can expect during your Swedish Massage session.

Your LMT will employ a technique called “draping,” which means that only the part of your body being worked on will be uncovered at any time. The rest of your body will remain under a sheet and/or towel. During your session, you will never be uncovered in a manner that is disconcerting to you.

Your LMT will generally also recommend aromatherapy. We offer special blends and you can choose the one that best meets your needs. You are encouraged to communicate your comfort level during your entire session, letting the LMT know if you want more or less pressure, or more or less heat. Your LMT will also want to know if you have any particular areas that need special attention, such as a sore back or shoulders.

We very much look forward to designing a customized treatment plan for you today.
